About the Artist
Charles "Jean" Horner has been building mandolins and fiddles for over 50 years near his family homestead in Westel, Tennessee. A master instrument maker, all of Horner's instruments are beautifully hand-carved using wood, especially curly maple, obtained from local loggers. Located in the remote woods of eastern Tennessee, his shop is a longtime gathering place for regional musicians and music lovers.

What is mastery to Horner?

“If a musician picks it up and plays on it and plays on it, you know it’s a good one. If he picks it up and plays a little and sets it back down, you know it didn’t make it.”
