About the Artist

As a young boy, potter Vernon Owens remembers working in the shop of his father, M.L. Owens, along with his uncle, Walter. Years later Owens and his wife, Pam, would become the owners of Jugtown Pottery in Seagrove. Continuing his family’s pottery tradition, Vernon Owens is an acclaimed craftsman and a recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts’ National Heritage Fellowship in 1996, and a North Carolina Folk Heritage Award.

What is mastery to Owens?
“I really believe that you have to have the ability to make your hands do what your eye tells them to. The next thing is being able to be critical of your own work.”
